In Which the Ringmaster Volunteers for Noble Duty
I expect to be helping DCTV set up Friday morning at this year's DragonCon. Since I tanked at getting our videos done, I have volunteered as fill-in guy for the duration of the con. Usually, I run cameras at the big events, no big deal, I've only done that for ten years. It makes me feel good giving back to this con that has become the focus of my tiny flickering sanity for the last six years.
After thanklessly working my ass off all summer for a University that doesn't like me, I get four precious days filled with distraction. If part of the distraction is to use my evil technical skills for GOOD, then so be it.
Most people just don't understand me, so I'll straighten things out here. I am NOT a technical person. I became good at TV engineering because I needed a job. It turned out that I had a knack for intuitively understanding complex systems. That's my job.
I AM a dreamer. Nothing gives me more pleasure than to give thought form. Unfortunately, I need to surround myself with the same type of people: artists, writers, dancers, chefs, plumbers. I need a constant influx of creativity to keep myself motivated. I am a writer at heart, but because I have become so good at my job, I rarely am afforded the time to do it properly.
So...DragonCon is that rare place where my two halves can be whole. The dreamer is constantly nourished on the creative atmosphere while the techie is learning new equipment and experiencing new uses for old ideas. It's a rare balance that makes me feel at peace for exactly four days a year.
Then I go back to the financial mess that is my life and try to figure out how to make ends meet after paying for those four days.
Be happy. Live Dreams.
