In Which the Ringmaster Re-Webs
For the last few months, I've been trying to move the old website to a new web host. The main drive has been to save money, but it's also been an opportunity to upgrade the service. For half the money, I am doubling the server capacity!
I've rebuilt the site as a series of stand-alone applications this time rather than the single content manager that I had used for the first couple incarnations. My philosophy is that most folks that visit the site aren't interested in creating a single login account for several different sections when they might just use one or two that don't require it. Honestly, most modules need a login only for users that have a level of admin access. Only the forum really requires a login for the casual user.
It's taken several months, and I'm finally ready to shut down the old server. Due to some serious limitations I can't import most of the old databases to run them on the new server. Radio vs Static and the lost dragons sites may be salvageable because of their tiny databases.
Jobe's Opera House has been updated to Simple Machines Forum from PHPWebsite.
Next week, the geeklog version of techno bohemia will be shut down for good. The old blogs will be deleted and we will start over again. I'm keeping a backup of the databases so that I might be able to get them installed and archived on the new server later.
Once the domain is transferred, the remaining old site links will begin to run off of the new server, in other words, it should be fairly transparent.
I'm excited to promote TechBo and bring in a whole spectrum of oddballs and artists to share in our conversations. There will be new blogs, new galleries, and new videos.
Here's to a fresh start!
