Captain Jax explains to Ruth that the ship they’ll be working on is the Aces and Eights. When Jim awakens he warns him that he’s to be civil and do a day’s work for a day’s pay. They are then introduced to the ship’s handyman Guido. Guido speaks no English and has a difficult time understanding any attempts to communicate. However, he usually grasps the task asked of him after a little difficulty.
Jax puts them through a series of training exercises that torment Guido. Guido runs from the cargo hold and returns with a gun. He fires at the newcomers. Jim fires a single round into Guido’s shoulder. Later, it turns out that he was trying to bring them a gun to practice with and tripped.
The ship sets down on Beaumonde. Captain Jax tells them that he’s going to find them some cargo and they should find passengers. They cross the street and quickly notice the Durty Gulch saloon. Just before heading to the saloon, they lose Guido. He is infront of the saloon talking to a woman in a fancy hat. She threatens to call the police and Jim and Ruth drag him in.
Inside the saloon, Captain Jax is negotiating with a client. They also meet a young woman looking for passage to the rim. They immediately sign her up and ask her to meet them at the dock. In the meantime, they lose track of Guido again. This time, they find Guido digging cash out of the cash register. He runs before they can stop him, then a large black woman with a shotgun introduces herself as Durty Gulch. She says that Guido has certain privileges around here, but she doesn’t like Captain Jax because of something he did in the past.
Captain Jax having finished his negotiation informs them that they have a cargo hold to fill. They tell him that they have found a passenger. The Captain asks them who she is, but they didn’t get any information from her other than she could afford the trip. He asks where Guido is, but they don’t know. The Captain looks frustrated and walks to a door behind the bar, his gun drawn.
“What are you waitin’ for,” he asks. The traveling pair stare at him blankly as he moves to one side of the door. The Captain shrugs and throws the door open wide. Suddenly Jim and Ruth are looking down the barrel of four guns with no where to hide. Guido raises his hands pleading and no one fires. It had been a poker game. Guido is the only person remaining at the table. He has a massive stack of chips. The Captain grabs him and ushers him out, but not before grabbing a handful of chips.
Back at the ship, the Captain orders Jim and Ruth to oversee the loading of the cargo. He explains that the cargo might attract awkward questions if they are found by a patrol, so they need to stash them in the smuggling compartment beneath the deck. Their guest arrives, introduces herself as Rose and is shown to her quarters. She is very quiet and elusive to any questions.
The cargo arrives and the harbor master requires a signature. Ruth signs her name to his electronic pad and they load the cargo.
Once they’ve lifted off, they stash the cases. All of the cases but one will fit into the smuggling compartment, requiring them to hide the last one somewhere else. They carry it up to Jim’s quarters. Rose catches them moving the case, but Ruth convinces her to return to her room. Once the case is hidden, they realize that it stinks to high heaven. Opening the case, they find that they have cases of Alliance ration bars, high in nutrients, low in taste. The ration bars bear the alliance seal meaning that it was stolen from the military, a hanging offense since the War.
They rush to the bridge.
Jim Liv says, “Cap’n, we’ve got a problem.”
The Captain calmly gestures to the screen, “Tell it to them.” Outside the ship is an Alliance Patrol Boat.
